What happens at a Sunday service?
Maybe you haven’t been to church before, or not in a very long time. Don’t worry – you are very welcome and it is easier than you might think.
The Cathedral’s main service is at 10:30am on Sunday. There’s a choir, candles and often incense. There’s music and prayer, readings from the Bible, stillness and time for reflection. You can join in as much as you like or just enjoy a time of peace. There’s a reflection that relates the Bible readings to what’s going on in the world now, and if you have children there are activities for them. We then celebrate the Eucharist, or Holy Communion, where we share bread and wine as Jesus and his disciples did at their last supper. All are welcome to come forward to receive bread and wine, but you do not have to – you might want to come forward and ask for a blessing instead, or simply stay in your seat.
When you arrive at the service someone will welcome you and give you an order of service with all of the words of the service printed. There’s no reserved seating and so you can sit where you feel comfortable.
After the service there’s tea and coffee – an opportunity to spend time together and get to know people in a relaxed setting.
You can see a Sunday service for yourself, and participate in one online. The Sunday services are streamed on the Cathedral’s Facebook page.
